About Giving

“I used to be critical of victims of domestic violence. ‘Why did they stay? Why don’t they just leave?’ I had so many questions until I was in their situation. Sixteen!! Sixteen is the number of attempts it took me to leave my abusive environment. Even then, it took almost losing my life from one of his chokeholds to break the cycle of abuse finally. Yes, I am a domestic violence survivor; I received recognition for Still Standing Strong, presented by the Partnership Against Domestic Violence and Communities United here in Atlanta, Georgia in 2011. The organization selected three strong women who came out with a unique domestic violence case and I was honored to be one of them that survived. With this second chance, I knew that there was important work that I could accomplish. I started by telling my story. I created the film as a way to raise awareness. In 2018, MedShare presented me with a certificate of appreciation recognizing me as ‘an exceptional advocate for MedShare’s mission to improve the quality of life of people and our planet.’ In 2020, I received the Heart of Gold Recognition from the Criminal Justice Coordinating Council (CJCC). Now, with the help of so many individuals in our community, and I hope you, too, we can make a lasting impact.”

Significance Of The Problem

National Coalition Against Domestic Violence (2020)

Georgia Coalition Against Domestic Violence (2020). A snapshot of Georgia: domestic violence and sexual violence.

People per minute are victims of rape, physical violence or stalking by an intimate partner in the United States — This equates to more than 12 million women and men over the course of a single year.

Calls are placed to domestic violence crisis hotlines per day

Victims Were Provided Shelter by Georgia Domestic Violence Shelters in 2019. An additional 4,176 were turned away due to lack of bed space.

Women across the world are killed every day by a partner or member of their own family, according to the UN. That is a total of 50,000 women a year murdered by people they know and should be able to trust.
